COMMODORE INFO
What's coming from Commodore?
Check out the special drawer CBM_Releases for all the info on recent
releases and products.
For the future, Commodore is defining a low end and a high end chipset.
The AA graphics chip seem to form a core on which both sets will build on.
Here are the high end features:
* 4 custom chips
* 32/64 bit wide VRAM (allow simultaneous access, increasing bandwidth)
* 57/114 Mhz pixel clock
* Support for "Chunky" pixels
--Bitplanes are not being done away with here, but chunky pixels will
be supported because there are some things they do better.
* Support for 24 bit planes
* CD-ROM ready
* Frame Grabber built in (don't know how fast it will operate)
* 1K x 1K screen resolutions
* 16 bit audio, samples up to 100kHz
* On demand DMA--instead of the synchronus DMA that is currently used,
asynchronus DMA will be done, but it will be backwards compatible.
* 12-20x bandwidth increase over AA chipset
* 32 bit blitter, 8x performance
Possibility of having a separate blitter for each bit plane
* Decompression modes for video (coming in from a CD-ROM presumably)
* ECS/AA compatible
* Improved genlock support
* 72 Hz refresh rate
* Processor independent (they are thinking ahead to RISC machines)
He expected to have the high end chips in silicon in 3-6 months. After
that, a lot of testing is needed to determine flaws, how compatible the
chips are with the old set, etc. I would guess any machine with these
specs is well over a year away.
[Quoted from a report on the nets about the Pasadena WoC show]
With regard to the operating system, here are the main differences:
OS 2
Rework of operating system
Scalable fonts
3D Look
OS 2.1
Localization (18 countries)
CrossDOS
Hard Drive Install Utility
Enhanced Printer Drivers, including a Postscript Driver
OS 3.0
AA support
Multimedia utilities
OS 3.1
Network API Extensions
File & Printer Sharing
DSP support
OS 4
Retargetable graphics ie, you can put any graphics board at all in the
machine and it'll run all your programs.
Full Postscript support
The upgrades to the operating system are apparently going to happen over
the next year. A priority has been to get the engineering department in
the position to effectively get new technology developed and out the door.
A low cost 68020 machine is also in the works, but no release date has
been mentioned.
IDE & SCSI-2
While the new A4000 has no SCSI interface, and in fact uses an IDE
interface (not so smart, only 2 devices allowed, only hard disks can be
added), there will be a SCSI-2 (the newer SCSI standard) card released by
Christmas, according to Commodore. Certainly this will be necessary for
those with SCSI devices already, such as Syquests and Tape backups.
Janus Library
New Janus Library for Workbench 2 available - Finally! now you can run
your bridgeboard properly.
CDTV
A new CDTV is ready for production. It will have surface-mount technology
and therefore be cost-reduced, and may have DCTV and a floppy built in.
Watch this space. Speaking of CDTV, Gail Wellington, whose "baby" it was,
is now gone from Commodore and the project team has been disbanded. This is
fairly reasonable if there's no more development to be done, I guess.
Commodore and NewTek
Word is that Commodore and New Tek are at *war*. New Tek is displeased at
Commodore 'cause the Toaster doesn't fit in the A3000 or A4000; about the
problems they had with the ECS Denise; about Commodore's snit over covering
the Amiga name; etc. Commodore is displeased at New Tek's covering of the
Amiga name; failure to properly follow specs (so the Toaster would fit in
new machines); as well as general snootieness. [Quoted from the nets]
Memory for A600
Andrew Hill found a producer fo a memory board in the UK - it costs £42 &
p+p and gives one meg of Ram. It fits in the A601 slot, apparently.
Commodore's version is likely to cost about $180.

GENERAL NEWS
Local Amiga artist
A gent called Rudy Florentinus of Runaway Bay in Qld has developed a
technique of colour printing his original art onto clear acetate, and
mounting it in double-sided glass so that it can be displayed on both
sides. There will be a display in November in Runaway Bay for those
interested.
Transitions
It seems that Saxon Industries, responsible for the often reviewed and
advertised but never seen "Saxon Publisher" DTP program, has closed down
and re-emerged under the name Emerald Graphics with the intention of going
for the Mac market. This is probably a good career move, since they did a
lousy job of getting their product seen and sold in the Amiga world. The
rights to the program, but not to SaxonScript (their Postscript interpreter
for non-Postscript printers), have gone to The Disc Company which publishes
KindWords. They may put out a cheaper, smaller version of the program.
Sim City and AI
I read that this game is being used to test artificial intelligence
software used in urban planning. Scientists from the UNI of Chicago are
using the game to put the system through its paces.
The Crystal Ball
Coming soon from Seagate - a 1.8" drive with capacities of 40 MB, 65 MB
and 80 MB.
Hewlett-Packard has announced the release of the Kittyhawk, a 1.3" 21 MB
drive on a smart card. This glass-disk based device consumes 1.6W and has
an average access time of 18 ms. Should retail for about US$250 next year
some time.

INTERESTING SOFTWARE
A-Log Pedigree Program by Mike Simpson
A-Log is an adaptation of Mike Simpson's very successful human genealogy
program, "A-Gene", which has been available in a Public Domain restricted
form for over 3 years, and as a Commercial "Licenseware" version for the
past 12 months.
A-Log is set up to be easily adapted to produce pedigrees for many types
of domestic animals, being initially designed for Dogs but the
configuration program A-LogCFG allows you to change this for Cats, Horses
or any other animal you might wish.
A-Log V1.00 is a pedigree data-base program capable of maintaining files
on approximately 1500 animals and 500 pairing on a single floppy data disk.
The program is written in GFA-Basic v3.5 and compiled with the GFA-Basic
compiler V3. It will operate in both PAL and NTSC modes.
Larger data-bases can be constructed if you have a hard-drive. A-Log logs
details of an animal's birth/registration/sale/pairing(s). A-Log also
includes a built in text editor which is used to append "Free-form"
notes/comments to any animal's record in the Data-Base. A further feature
is the ability to view digitised photos of animals etc. from within the
program. animals and pairing records can be searched for Affix, Full Name,
Birth Date, City and Country (or any combination thereof) as well as on the
user definable codes..
Reports, which may be output to screen, printer or disk file in most
cases, include Pedigree Charts of any animal, Descendants charts for up to
50 generations and various lists of animals, pairing etc. sorted in
various orders.
Enquiries from Mike Simpson - see his address at the bottom of the
BlitzBasic review this issue.
[Demo version available from our PD library - see listing of DEMO disks
this issue.]
Aladdin Lighting Control System - Oz Product
This is from Phoenix, and is touted as a "complete ligting control and
design console incorporated internally in an Amiga, providing features not
found on professional control consoles costing up to A$150,000...". It's
available as an Amiga slot card for A2000/3000 with software, it is
available in various configurations - ie, enquire about your need, be it
theatrical, educational, whatever. I'm sure Phoenix can tailor something
to any specific need.
This can be controlled remotely by cordless telephones, and ARexx and MIDI
support are also included, meaning that lighting can be controlled by other
software or triggered by keyboards, instruments or sequencers. The
possibilities are there! More info from Phoenix on (08) 293 8752.
AmiBack strikes at Quarterback
Striking telling blows too - see the warning about Quarterback 5 hard disk
backup program in Hints&Tips this issue. Their AmiBack backup program
seems to be the emerging winner by all reports after a long time at the top
by Quarterback. Perhaps the buying out of Quarterback products (Central
Coast Software) by New Horizons some time ago signalled an end to the
attention to detail provided by the Chamberlains, the original developers.
Be that as it may... Moonlighter Software Development has just released
Ami-Back Tools (remember Quarterback Tools?) which includes: * GP, a disk
optimiser * Disk Analyst, a disk repairer * 911-Recovery, a file recoverer
* Antiseptic, a disk eraser * Lab Test, to check and compare checksums for
file corruption and virus protection.
From Color Computer Systems:
Real 3D V. 2
Said to be very powerful, it has a new interface that handles
multi-tasking well; motion blur, depth of field, AutoCAD import/export,
tree and landscape fractal generators and much more.
The FrameMachine
A hardware/software package, this is a double-buffered (PAL overscan)
24bit frame buffer, real time 24bit frame grabber, digital video effects,
genlock, picture in picture, TBC, video mixer, realtime scaling on incoming
video and more. To be released in October in Germany, this will combine
with a program like Scala to be a serious contender in the multimedia
stakes.
Morph Plus - more futureware
This is an image warping/morphing DVE (Digital Video Effects) package from
ASDG with lots of features such as read/write Anim files, use all of ASDG's
scanner, film recorder and format expansion modules. It comes with FRED, an
animation assembler/editor/batch processing program to help you combine
effects into professional quality sequences.

Maple V Mathematics
This is the way to handle those tedious calculations and graphs in
mathematics - it is a big powerful program which can do 2D or 3D plots, and
solve all your differential equations for you. Runs on Workbench 2 and
really wants an A3000, with at least 6 MB of hard disk space and 2 MB of
Ram, and it has full ARexx capability. You could send data from a text
editor to Maple, which can then return the results in LaTeX format to be
sent via ARexx to AmigaTeX. Very sophisticated. More info from:
Waterloo Maple Software
160 Columbia St West, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada N2L 3L3.
Tel: (519) 7472373.
Price CDN$530 approx.
Learning languages with Audio Gallery
Called "Talking Picture Dictionaries", and available in French, German,
Spanish and English (as a 2nd language) for $99, and such oriental systems
as Russian, Japanese, Chinese and Korean for $129, this series uses a lot
of graphics and audio digitising of native speakers to get the point
across. I haven't seen these in action but it sounds like a good idea.
You can get demo disks from Megadisc for our usual pricing but these are
not yet PD disks so no other PD libraries may distribute them. Call and
ask for more information.
Gold Disk's Pro Draw 3
Said to be quite an improvement over the previous version - the general
look is similar but more of a Workbench 2 look. Other features:
* gradient fills with any number of steps
* support for Adobe Type 1 and Compugraphic typefaces (such as you can get
from Megadisc) - these fonts can then also be used as system fonts for
Workbench.
* ARexx interface in the form of function and tool genies
* IFF ILBM 24-bit colour support
* Built-in editor for creating and modifying ARexx scripts and genies.
Available from Megadisc.
AMPlot2 - Postscript Graph Plotting software
This was reviewed in a previous Megadisc, and is designed to produce high
quality graphs for technical papers and the like. Now supports HPGL and the
new IFF_DR2D structured drawing format as well as Postscript and EPSF
(encapsulated Postscript), so you can import it into DTP programs. There is
extensive ARexx support, and there are 4 major graphi types with many
variations. The price is 60 pounds, and upgrades from earlier versions cost
12 pounds. Get a demo of the program on Fish 737.

Interesting Publications
OzAmiga dead, Amiga Fiend stirs...
I did a mini-review on MD29 in MegaBites of this new mag. It was a brave
try, but it's a difficult and expensive business starting up any magazine,
let alone a paper one, especially in these times.
But as one dies, another rises like the Phoenix from the ashes - Amiga
Fiend sent me a brochure which was curiously tentative. They kept saying
"if we decide to go ahead..." We'll see if they have better luck. A gent
called Piers Goodhew signed himself as the editor.
24-Bits and Pieces
Assembled by David Jacobs, of Creations in Perth, this rather
tasteful-looking newsletter is "dedicated to 24-bit imaging on the Amiga",
and so it is. The first issue is a 7 page foolscap production containing a
preview of OpalVision, a 24-bit product roundup, a b&w art gallery, a list
of 24-bit capable products, a piece on images prepared for printing, and
Part I of a piece on JPEG, the latest method of compressing files, most
important for 24-bit output considering the huge sizes you can get.
All in all, a very good effort, so if your thing is 24-bit stuff, get it!
Subscription rates are: 1 year (4 issues) $18.

I quote from what he sent:
If you want to contact us for some strange reason like donating some money
you are more then welcome. If you send $10-20 (the more the better) you'll
be guaranteed another release on which we are currently working. I won't
tell you what it is but is has a lot to do with choppers and it too is in
full 3D. Unfortunately I cannot give you the exact date it will be out in
PD as I am doing Year 12 and others are in Uni but I can guarantee that
we're working full time and hopefully it should be out this year. If you
don't want to send any money you still are welcome to contact us for any
strange reason that you may have. (for example swapping ideas, suggestions
about our stuff, etc.). You'll also receive greetings in our next release.

Interesting Hardware
Top Chip from Black Knight Peripherals
A recent press release says they're now shipping Top Chip, a small 2 MB
chip Ram expansion board for the A500/2000 which fits internally. There is
no soldering or traces to cut. With 2 MB installed it costs $269; with the
2 MB Agnus chip an extra $69. Further info on (02) 9013624.
At Pasadena WoC Show
ICD Hard Disks
ICD was showing their new Trifecta hard drive. It was running 4.5 minutes
of Star Wars (where they escape from the Death Star) Full screen lores
nolace HAM at 30 fps & audio on a stock Amiga 500 w/1Mb of chip RAM. The
drive was transferring data at 1.9Mb/sec, total size of video was 350K. I
honestly though they had a VCR plugged into the monitor when I first saw
it. I had to walk around behind to check if there was a composite
connection. I'd heard about these kinds of demos before, but I don't think
it really sinks in until you see it in person.
CineMorph [Press Release]
In a surprise move, GVP is releasing a previously unannounced morphing
package. Called CineMorph, this impressive software system brings the
features of a high-end commercial morphing system to the Amiga, giving any
user the ability to warp single images, morph between two or more images,
and even create sequences of full motion morphs.
CineMorph features include exceptionally fast rendering that can be fully
automated to save you time. You can preview results within CineMorph or
render directly to Amiga formats, HAM-E, DCTV and 24-bit IFF with controls
provided directly in CineMorph. The system also supports full 24-bit
output for professional needs on framebuffers such as the IV24.
CSA Accelerator
Computer Systems Associates (CSA) is readying an all new accelerator, the
Derringer, that breaks speed and price barriers at the same time. The
Derringer is a new 25 Mhz 68030-based accelerator that gives A3000-level
performance for $249.95 -- about the same price as many 68000-based
accelerators -- while still running three to five times faster. The
Derringer supports the addition of 1, 2, 4, or 8 more megabytes DRAM
together with a 50 Mhz 68881 or 68882 math co-processor. Additional 16 and
32 megabyte DRAM upgrades will be possible as future DRAM technology
develops.
The CSA Derringer is a self-contained, single-board plug-and-play unit
that replaces the 68000 CPU inside your Amiga. It will work with any A500
or A2000 and is scheduled to ship during the fourth quarter of 1992.
CanDo 2.
This version, finished just before the show, features script
bookmarking - allowing you to mark places in your script for easy return;
SuperDuper - a utility that allows you to insert spreadsheet-style columns
and rows of objects into your applications; Object Layer Tool - which
allows you to change the hierarchy of objects - and an error-checking
utility, Bug Basher.
G-Lock
GVP's new low-cost genlock, called "G-Lock", is a highly intergrated, very
flexible external genlock that can be used with all Amiga models in both
NTSC and PAL video standards, as well as SECAM conversion. The G-Lock
offers a video and audio solution to the video ebthusiast or producer.
Required Hardware and Software: the G-Lock works with any Amiga with 512K
Chip Memory (1MB recommended), Amiga-Dos 1.3 or greater (2.0 recomended).
